Elks sack machine Jake Ceresna just keeps getting better

In 2022, Jake Ceresna set a career high with 10 sacks and was named a CFL All-Star for the first time.

So for an encore, all Ceresna has done is go out and record 10 sacks again — and there’s still three games remaining for the Edmonton Elks lineman to establish a new career high.

What’s more, Ceresna is the first Green and Gold player to have at least 10 sacks in consecutive seasons since Canadian Football Hall of Famer Leroy Blugh and Bennie Goods both reached double-digit sack totals in the 1995 and 1996 seasons.

Ceresna is keeping pretty good company these days. After picking up two sacks against the BC Lions in Week 16, he moved into a tie with teammate AC Leonard for third place among the CFL sack leaders this season. He also jumped ahead of EE Wall of Honour member Larry Wruck for the 13th most sacks in club history.

The 29-year-old now has 32 sacks during his time wearing Green and Gold, and at the rate he’s going, he’ll crack the top 10 next year (10th place is currently held by Marcus Howard, with 41 sacks).

Ceresna had five defensive tackles against BC, giving the Cortland State product 41, the most of any defensive lineman in the entire CFL has through the first 16 weeks of the 2023 season. That’s also his career high, a benchmark he’s going to keep pushing higher over the last three games on Edmonton’s schedule.
