Edmonton is led by quarterback Tre Ford, who was just recognized as Player of the Month on the CFL Honour Roll for August. The second-year Canadian has guided the Elks to back-to-back wins, 24-10 over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Tim Hortons Field on Aug. 17 and 30-20 over the Ottawa Redblacks in Edmonton on Aug. 27.

In three starts this season, all during August, Ford has completed 40 of 52 passes for 680 yards with four touchdowns and one interception, while rushing for 184 yards and two touchdowns.

A big part of Edmonton’s recent success has been its defence, as the Green and Gold have allowed twenty or fewer points in back-to-back games for the first time in almost two years. The Elks have been much better defensively on the road this season, allowing just 19.6 points per game compared to 30.6 at Commonwealth Stadium.

Monday marks the 57th time the Green and Gold have clashed with the Stampeders on Labour Day, one of Canadian sports’ greatest traditions. Calgary holds a slight edge in the all-time Labour Day series, with a record of 29-26-1. The teams have split the last two Labour Day games, with the Stamps prevailing 26-18 last year following a 32-20 triumph for the Elks in 2021.

This is the Alberta teams’ first meeting of the 2023 regular season, although they did play in the pre-season on May 22, when Calgary defeated the Elks 29-24 at McMahon Stadium. Receiver Gavin Cobb was one of the young Elks who made an impression that game, catching all three of his targets for a total of 42 yards, including a 27-yard touchdown reception.

The Elks (2-9) currently trail Calgary (3-8) by two points, and with a victory could move into a tie with their provincial rivals as Edmonton looks to climb the standings and get into the playoff chase.
