Edmonton got its first win of 2023 on Aug. 17, when second-year quarterback Tre Ford led the Elks past the Hamilton Ti-Cats 24-10 at Tim Hortons Field.

The Elks have found new energy with Ford under centre. The Canadian pivot made his season debut against the Toronto Argonauts in Week 10, and two games combined has completed 25 of 34 passes for 363 yards with three touchdowns.

Ford has also helped fuel Edmonton’s ground attack, rushing for 110 yards and one touchdown in his two games. Running back Kevin Brown has been the Elks’ bell cow, with a combined 187 rushing yards from 27 carries and one touchdown over the Green and Gold’s last two contests.

With Eugene Lewis returning to the lineup last week in Hamilton after a stint on the six-game injured list, Ford now has a full compliment of receivers in his arsenal. That includes Steven Dunbar Jr., who caught a pair of TD passes from Ford against the Ti-Cats.

Meanwhile, veteran receiver Manny Arceneaux continues his chase of history. After last week becoming the 30th player in CFL history with 9,000 receiving yards, Arceneaux now has his sights sets on becoming the 30th player in CFL history with 60 touchdown receptions, needing just two more to join that exclusive club. Arceneaux will be wearing custom cleats in Sunday’s game, which fans will be able to bid on in support of the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation as part of the Elks’ Cleats of Strength program.

Fittingly, one of the greatest pass catchers in CFL history will be in the house, as Terry Vaughn becomes the latest Green and Gold great to be enshrined on the Wall of Honour. Vaughn spent six seasons in Edmonton, surpassing 1,000 yards receiving in all of them, and helped the Green and Gold win the Grey Cup in 2003.

Ford’s counterpart in red and black is Dustin Crum, the top rushing quarterback in the CFL this season with 451 yards. Edmonton’s defence, which is coming off a seven-sack performance in Hamilton, will look to contain the 24-year-old Ottawa pivot.

The Elks and Redblacks met in Week 4 at TD Place, where the hosts defeated Edmonton 26-7 on June 30. Edmonton is 10-6 against the RedBlacks in the regular season since Ottawa’s return to the CFL in 2014.
