For the second time this season, the Edmonton Elks will take on the BC Lions, in a matchup of West Division rivals at Commonwealth Stadium on Saturday at 5 p.m. MT.
The Elks are coming off a 28-14 loss to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at IG Field in Week 7, while the Lions beat the Saskatchewan Roughriders 19-9 in Vancouver to take over first place in the division with a 5-1 record.
Edmonton was defeated by the Lions 22-0 at BC Place Stadium on June 17, where the Green and Gold held BC to just one touchdown but were unable to put points on the board against the Lions. Just about every opponent has struggled to put up points this season against the stingy Lions, who are the only team in the CFL entering Week that are allowing less than 20 points per game (18.4).

The Elks have also been stout defensively, keeping the opposition out of the endzone in the first half of two of their last three games, as well as in Week 2 against the Lions. AC Leonard leads Edmonton with four sacks, while Marcus Lewis and Loucheiz Purifoy are tied for tops on the Elks with two interceptions apeice.
Offensively, the Green and Gold is looking to move the ball with more consistency to compliment their big play ability: Dillon Mitchell’s 80-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Taylor Cornelius against Winnipeg last week was Edmonton’s third passing play of at least 80 yards in 2023, the most by a CFL team in a single season in more than a decade.

Mitchell finished the game in Winnipeg with 115 receiving yards, his first 100-yard performance of 2023. That’s a great sign for the playmaking receiver who now has 183 yards receiving in his last two games after catching 10 balls for 61 yards over Edmonton’s first five contests. Mitchell’s only touchdown at Commonwealth Stadium thus far in his young career came against the Lions, on Oct. 21, 2022.
For the Elks, Saturday’s contest presents an opportunity to end their home losing streak against the last team that the Green and Gold defeated at Commonwealth Stadium. Edmonton is 8-1 in its last nine home games against the Lions.
