Edmonton remains in search of its first win of 2023 after losing 37-29 to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats last Thursday (July 13) at Commonwealth Stadium. The Bombers are also looking to bounce back from defeat in Week 6, when the Ottawa Redblacks stormed back from a 19-point second-half deficit to stun Winnipeg 31-28 in overtime.

Taylor Cornelius starts at quarterback for the Elks against the team that he completed a career-high 25 passes on July 22, 2022. The third-year Elk has completed 68 passes for 843 yards in five starts this season.

The game is a sort of homecoming for Elks receiver Gain Cobb, who went to university in Winnipeg where he played Canada West football for the Manitoba Bisons prior to being drafted by the Green and Gold in 2022. The 25-year-old had the best game of his young CFL career in Week 6, racking up 103 punt return yards on 4 returns, joining teammate CJ Sims as the only Green and Gold players since 2010 to average over 25 yards per punt return in a game. Sims accomplished the feat in Week 3 vs. Toronto.

Edmonton and Winnipeg met in the preseason, at Commonwealth Stadium on May 27, when the Bombers squeaked out a 25-23 victory. Maurice Ffrench (6 catches for 43 yards) and Sims (2 catches for 50 yards), leading in receptions and receiving yards, respectively, while running backs Shannon Brooks and Kevin Brown rushed for 72 yards and 55 yards, respectively.

All-Star lineman Jake Ceresna and Edmonton’s defence will try to put the clamps on two-time CFL Most Outstanding Player award winner Zach Collaros and the Blue Bombers offence, which has propelled Winnipeg to score a league-leading 162 points heading into Week 7. Edmonton, however, has proven defensively stout away from Commonwealth Stadium, allowing the opposition to score only four touchdowns total through three games on the road.

Edmonton is aiming to snap a three-game losing streak at IG Field, where the Bombers have been near unbeatable in recent years, winning 28 of their last 31 regular season home games going back to 2018.
