Hamilton arrives in Edmonton with momentum, having won their first game of the season in Week 5, 21-13 at home against the Ottawa Redblacks last Saturday. The Elks are searching for the first win of 2023 after coming up just short in Regina against the Saskatchewan Roughriders last week, falling 12-11.

Edmonton has allowed only one touchdown in its three of its five games, and conceded more than two touchdowns in a game just once. There have been a number of standout efforts thus far in the 2023 season by members of the Elks defence, including against Saskatchewan last week when AC Leonard sacked Riders quarterback Trevor Harris three times, tying for the most sacks in a single game by an Elks player in more than two decades. Elks defensive lineman J-Min Pelley is tied for the league lead with three tackles–for-loss, while Edmonton linebacker Nyles Morgan ranks third in the CFL with 31 defensive tackles.

They’ll look to keep Hamilton’s offence in lockdown; the Ti-Cats haven’t scored more than 21 points in any of their last three games. Edmonton, meanwhile, has scored at least 20 points in 13 consecutive games against the Ti-Cats at Commonwealth Stadium. That’s a promising trend, but the Elks will need to increase their scoring output from a CFL-low 12.4 points per game.

Elks pivot Taylor Cornelius will make his fourth start at quarterback of 2023, coming off his best statistical performance of the year, with 17 completions, 226 passing yards, 58 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown, all season highs.

These teams met just once last season, with the Elks coming away with a thrilling 29-25 win at Tim Hortons Field on Canada Day. Edmonton rallied from a 13-point deficit on July 1, 2022, earning their first victory the year.

Edmonton is 60-38-1 in the regular season against Hamilton. The teams have met an additional four times in the postseason, including the Grey Cup in 1980 (a 48-10 win for the Green and Gold) and 1986 (a 39-15 Ti-Cats victory).
