Edmonton is unbeaten in its last four trips east of Manitoba, a streak that dates back to the 2021 season and includes a victory over the Redblacks in the Nation’s Capital last summer.

Both teams are searching for their first wins of 2023. The RedBlacks have started off 0-2 while Edmonton is 0-3 following a 43-31 loss to the defending Grey Cup champion Toronto Argonauts at Commonwealth Stadium on Sunday (June 25).

Jarret Doege is expected to make his first career start under centre for the Elks. The rookie quarterback made his regular season debut against the Argos, coming into the game late in the third quarter and throwing a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns to fellow rookie Vincent Forbes-Mombleau.

Also shining in his regular season last Sunday was wide receiver CJ Sims, who had one of the best performances on kick and punt returns by a Green and Gold player in the last decade. Sims had 181 kickoff return yards, the ninth highest single-game total in team history, and 104 punt return yards, making him the first Edmonton player with 100-plus yards on both kickoff returns and punt returns in same game since 2013.

The Elks will be without the services of veteran all-star receivers Manny Arceneaux and Geno Lewis, who are both on the six-game injured list, providing an opportunity for wideout Maurice Ffrench, who will suit up for his first CFL regular season game. Doege and Ffrench have shown chemistry, with the former passing to the latter for a highlight-reel 45-yard touchdown during Edmonton’s preseason-opening game against the Calgary Stampeders at McMahon Stadium on May 22.

The Elks dominated Ottawa on their last visit to TD Place, Aug. 19, 2022, scoring the games’ final 27 points en route to a 30-12 win. The Redblacks got a measure of revenge a week later, on Aug. 27, 2022, with a 25-18 win at Commonwealth Stadium. Edmonton has won six of its last 10 overall against Ottawa.
