TRANSACTIONS | Elks sign three players

The Edmonton Elks announced Monday the signings of Americans Marloshawn Franklin Jr. (DB), Ky’el Hemby (DB) and Antonio Mitchell (DB).

Franklin has previous CFL experience from pre-season stints with the Ottawa Redblacks last year and B.C. Lions in 2019. The Michigan native spent the 2021 season with the Hamburg Sea Devils in the European League of Football, where he recorded 22 tackles, two interceptions, and two forced fumbles in six games. Franklin played collegiately at Mesa Community College (2014-15) and California (2016-17).

Hemby played three years (2018 to 2020) of NCAA Division I football at Southern Mississippi, following one season at Iowa Western Community College in 2017. In 34 career games with the Golden Eagles, he recorded nine interceptions. He ranked third in the nation with six interceptions in 2018 when he was named to the All-Conference USA Second Team.

A former high school football player at Vista Murrieta in California, Mitchell competed as a sprinter collegiately, with the track and field teams at Riverside Community College (2017-19), Arizona State University (2019-2021) and Purdue University (2021-22). He won the California Community College Athletic Association championship in the 100m twice (2017-18 and 2018-19) and 200m once (2018-19).
