TRANSACTION | Elks ink receiver Eugene Lewis

The Edmonton Elks are bringing the East’s top player to the West, as the CFL club announced Tuesday it has signed American wide receiver Eugene Lewis.

Lewis was awarded the Terry Evanshen Trophy as the CFL East Division’s Most Outstanding Player in 2022, while earning his third consecutive CFL East All-Star selection. Lewis suited up in 17 games for the Montreal Alouettes, catching 91 passes for 1,303 yards and leading the East Division with 10 touchdown receptions.

“Eugene has elite ball skills and has shown great leadership the past few years as a top target in the CFL,” says Geroy Simon, Elks assistant general manager. “He’ll not only lead us on the field but also off. He’s the exact type of guy we need for their organization.”

A two-time CFL All-Star, Lewis has spent his entire CFL career in Montreal after signing with the Alouettes in 2017. Over 68 career regular season games, Lewis has 276 receptions for 4,347 yards, with 28 touchdown catches.

Lewis played three seasons at Penn State before transferring to Oklahoma for his senior season in 2016, totalling 122 passes for 1,569 yards and 10 touchdowns in his NCAA Division 1 football career.
