TRANSACTIONS | Elks sign former NFL DL Kony Ealy

The Edmonton Elks announced Wednesday the team has signed former NFL second round draft pick Kony Ealy and added him to the one-game injured list.

The American defensive end, who was selected 60th overall by the Carolina Panthers in the 2014 NFL Draft, spent four seasons in the NFL, totalling 90 tackles, 15 sacks, two interceptions, six forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries in 62 games.

Ealy played for the Panthers from 2014 to 2016, and helped Carolina reach Super Bowl 50 where he tied the championship game record with three sacks and became the first player in Super Bowl history to record an interception and multiple sacks.

After being traded to the New England Patriots, Ealy was claimed off waivers by the New York Jets. He played 15 games for the Jets in 2017, registering 14 tackles, one sack and one interception. He also spent time with the Dallas Cowboys and Oakland Raiders in 2018, but did not see any game action.

Ealy appeared in four CFL games last season with the Toronto Argonauts, totalling four defensive tackles and one sack. He was released by the Argos prior to the start of the 2022 season.

The Missouri product played three seasons of NCAA Division I football for the Tigers, and was an All-SEC First Team selection as a junior in 2013 after recording 43 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss, 9.5 sacks, three forced fumbles and one interception.

Edmonton returns to action Friday when the Elks host the undefeated Winnipeg Blue Bombers at The Brick Field at Commonwealth Stadium.
