(Edmonton) Former Eskimo Head Coach Darrell Royal passed away on Wednesday at the age of 88.

Darrell was the Esks’ third head coach since the team came into the league in 1949. Coach Royal played at University of Oklahoma under famed coach Bud Wilkinson before coming to Edmonton in 1953, introducing the “Split-T” offense to Edmonton, and upon leaving a year later, recommended the perfect quarterback to run it – Jackie Parker.

Coach Royal later had a hugely successful 20-year career coaching at the University of Texas. He won 11 conference titles, 10 Cotton Bowl championships and two national championships in 1963 and 1969 with the Longhorns. He won 167 games at Texas from 1957 to 1976, a mark that still stands as a school record. Royal was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1983.
