TRANSACTION | Cue the comeback, CFL legend Simon inks himself with Elks

The greatest pass catcher in CFL history is returning to the field.

Nearly a decade after playing his last game, Geroy Simon has signed with the Edmonton Elks for the 2023 CFL season.

Simon, who is the CFL’s all-time leader in receiving yards, will report to training camp in May looking to earn a spot on the Elks roster.

“I’m excited to have this opportunity to relaunch my career,” said Simon, 47. “There’s a lot of tread left on these tires.”

Over 15 seasons with the B.C. Lions, Saskatchewan Roughriders and Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Simon caught 1,029 passes for 16,532 yards with 103 touchdown receptions. The Johnstown, Penn., native is a three-time Grey Cup champion and six-time CFL All-Star.

“Geroy’s been a game-breaker since the Clinton administration,” said Elks head coach and general manager Chris Jones. “He can teach these youngsters a thing or two.”

Since retiring in 2014, Simon has worked in player personnel. He joined the Elks as assistant general manager in 2022, and will remain in that role in addition to suiting up for the Green and Gold this season.

“The legendary Jackie Moon of the Flint Tropics proved it’s possible to excel as an executive and an athlete,” said Simon. “I will also be in charge of locker room music and team karaoke night.”
